Electric Skyline is proud to have delivered Ireland’s first solar-powered public EV charging hub, located at Westside Community Centre in Galway. Commissioned by Galway City Council and delivered in partnership with Arbarr and ePower, the project sets a new national benchmark for smart, sustainable, and scalable EV infrastructure.

This innovative system was made possible with funding support from ZEVI (Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland), under the Department of Transport.

The Westside site faced a significant energy limitation, with only a 40kVA electrical supply available. Traditional EV charging infrastructure would have required a costly and disruptive grid upgrade, with ongoing high standing charges.

Electric Skyline took a different approach: design a solution that works with existing capacity, reduces grid dependency, and prioritises clean, renewable power.

We installed a fully integrated energy system featuring:

  • A 150kW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

  • 90 rooftop solar panels

  • Smart load management controls

  • A mix of fast and standard chargers

During the day, the system is primarily powered by on-site solar energy. At night, the battery is topped up using off-peak electricity from the grid, improving cost-efficiency and reliability. When an EV plugs in, power flows directly from the battery — not the grid — keeping demand low and performance high.

This setup is intelligent and adaptive. The system constantly monitors demand in real time, ensuring that both the community centre and EV chargers operate smoothly without exceeding available capacity.

It also enables solar energy export, generating an additional revenue stream by feeding surplus power back into the grid.

Most importantly, this model is scalable and replicable. It can be implemented in commercial or public settings anywhere grid capacity is limited or a higher MIC (Maximum Import Capacity) is cost-prohibitive.

Electric Skyline led the full delivery of the project, managing:

  • System design and engineering

  • Solar PV installation

  • Battery and charger integration

  • On-site commissioning and safety
